Styling with Stephanie... 5 Spring 2018 Trends to Try

A new season = a new round of fun trends to try. I selected 5 very easy, very wearable trends to put to the test. Some of them you may already have in your closet, so I will also give some styling tips to help pull your looks together.

The statement sleeve could mean a tie, bell, trumpet, slit or ruffles - often more than one of these. The rest of the silhouette should be simple (although I do like a bold floral print on the statement sleeve blouses). Pair the blouse with straight or skinny denim to keep the emphasis on your embellished arms. In fact, I encourage you to stack some beaded bracelets - like our Goldfine 8-strand crystal ones. On your feet, I love these "of the moment" kitten heel metallic sandals from Rebecca Minkoff.

Light-wash, paper-thin chambray loves warm days & cool nights. Like a perfectly worn T or pair of denim, these spring chambrays are like getting a hug from an old-friend. The old stand-by, but in a fresh new way. Wear this chambray jacket or chambray shirt over a floral dress (long or short). For the button-down, consider tying in a knot to show off your waist. And yes, it's perfectly acceptable to wear a Canadian tuxedo (that's with jeans, to those unfamiliar with the term). If you are going that route, don't match your denim wash & please tuck your shirt. Add a cute silk scarf around your neck or as a belt and an on-the-go backpack from Rebecca Minkoff.

Stevie Nicks rocker-style lace-up with the comfort of sweatshirts and leggings. This is a simple trend to try because lace-ups have been showing up on everything from leather to sweatpants. Whatever your dress code, incorporate some lace-up element. These leggings paired with a cotton-jersey draped moto jacket or oversized sweatshirt is a simple grocery store to casual dinner look. I would wear amazing 90s platform mules to elevate the style factor.

We have been seeing ruffles pop up here & there on specialty pieces, but now it's easy to give this trend a try - from the daintiest ruffle on the cuff of a sleeve to voluminous layers on dresses. Be wary of the ruffles overwhelming your frame. If you are petite, pick a thin or transparent fabric or keep it on the minimal side and for others, throw on layers or ruffles or ruffles in a sturdier cotton poplin. All fun in moderation. Keep the jewelry to one special piece like these gorgeous tiered druzy earrings from Helen Wang. An embossed floral crossbody, especially a chain strap keeps the feminine look modern. Keep your shoes minimal, like a kitten heel or strappy sandal.

Topping off the "Top 5 Spring Trends to Try" is the trench. A spring staple gets a makeover with luxe fabrics and light pastel colors. This trench is actually a dusty rose colored Cupro fabric. It is the new go-to to put over flirty dresses and denim outfits. In this "on-the-go /traveling/cool-girl" look I styled a sweater tank, leather leggings, oversized floral tote (with matching clutch), rose colored sunnies, and a Corkcicle tumbler to hold her Starbucks. For a dressier look, it doesn't get any better than the Line winter white wool trench coat worn by Meghan Markle when she announced her engagement to Prince Harry! Hurry in if you want to get a glimpse of this extra special piece as we only have one left!

Haute for the Holidays

The leaves are still on the trees in crimson & gold colors, but at Stephanie's, our thoughts are turning to all of the holiday festivities happening over the next two months. We are here to get you through the holidays looking good & feeling prepared!... You're welcome!

Black Tie Bash

No matter who you are with, this Badgley Mischka will knock everyone's socks off. The lush velvet hugs without being clingy, the neckline is sexy yet demure, and the delicate embroidered sleeves reveal a hint of wine color. We had to add a little Helen Wang sparkle to her neck & a burgundy fur shawl for a little luxury.

Office Occasion

Argh, the dreaded office party - when you spend 40 plus hours a week with others, probably the last thing you want to do is go to a party with them. Take a deep breath, sip a glass a wine before you head out, and slip into this gorgeous Nicole Miller crepe tuck dress. It is modest enough but not too much that you feel like you can't let loose. I recommend adding Swarovski crystal bracelets by our new local designer, Goldfine & contrast with a wool & sequin scarf. This byzantine plum number will be your new go-to dress for years to come.

Family Festivities

What should be the easiest thing to dress for, is sometimes the most difficult. Family festivities might include: cooking at home - don't want to be too hot; going to a play or religious service - need to be dressed up; and playing on the floor with kids - gotta be comfortable. These textured black Ecru pants and on-trend velvet Majestic turtleneck satisfy all of these needs. Adding a unique Helen Wang lariat and leopard print fur bucket bag from USA-made August makes it fun!

Friendly Fete

I saved the best for last because, let's be honest - what holiday parties do we have the most fun at?... the friends' party. Dance the night away or feast on delicious treats wearing this Fifteen Twenty Dress with edgy chain necklace by Goldfine and grab your white ostrich embossed leather clutch. Shine on! Oh, did I forget the amazing fox jacket that will literally be the most amazing thing in your closet? Yes, you need this! Happy Holidays Indeed!!

Three Ways to Wear Your Slip Dress

3 Ways to Wear a Slip Dress

We've been wearing this trend for the past couple seasons but it is still going strong. So many uses for this gorgeous silk print, bias cut DVF slip dress!

  1. 90s trend: I feel like I'm on an episode of Friends in this lookLayering a tight fitting Majestic turtleneck keeps arms covered but still shows off the detail of the dress & your figure. Top it off with long delicate necklaces & chunky heeled pumps or Mary Janes.
  2. Daytime look: Put a cozy, oversized sweater on top of the slip dress, ankle booties & dangly earrings.
  3. Evening look: Throw on a fur, sparkly earrings & embellished shoes or bag and you are le femme glam.

dvf wRap dress: the midi version

The DVF wrap dress: A classic with a twist. I put on this silk jersey midi dress & honestly - you don't have to do anything, it's so amazing. But to change up the classic, add jewel tone accessories. I love these silk tassel earrings from local designer Helen Wang. Add a big slouchy tote to carry all my essentials for the day in a rich wine color. I would wear a luscious velvet over the knee boot if I had them, but a suede pair will work just as well. The wool fedora just gives my outfit that oh-so 70's swagger.

Everyday Lace

I am absolutely obsessed with this outfit!! For a daytime lace look, pair a delicate lace top with dark skinnies or straight leg ankle pants. (I am wearing a dark grey Citizens.) Throw a thin wool jacket, bomber jacket, or grandpa cardi over to keep you cozy and warm. For an evening look: lose the jacket, grab a metallic or embellished clutch & a great pair of pointy-toe heels to complete the outfit.

What I'm Wearing... 7 Pieces, 7 Days

I am going to attempt the (almost) impossible. I am going to style 7 beautiful, versatile pieces from the store & take them from day-to-night all in one crazy week. I will use a typical week for me as an example of how to use a small investment of clothes to make a big impact.

Monday: Casual style, or as I like to call it "Momming"

Monday - I'm thankful I wore a scarf & cozy sweater because it's chilly this morning dropping off the kids at school. I rush to Target to beat the "Mom rush." By the time I walk out, it's warm enough to lose the sweater. Time to get some work done in my office. The lightweight cupro tank is essential after my hot yoga class. Time to head out the door to pick up the boys from school. Where does the time go?

Tuesday: Work Day!

Tuesday - I usually work in the store on Tuesdays. Thankfully, it's a relaxed dress code - we dress professional but true to our personal style. Citizens of Humanity Rockets are my favorite jean right now. The clean, skinny leg is great for booties, flats or my current obsession - a pointy heel. They are high rise which keeps my waistline in check so I can wear this cute lace crop top! The lace is sexy and feminine, but the Tart jacket gives my outfit a professional edge.

Wednesday: Board Meeting to Date with Hubby

Wednesday - After dropping the boys off at school & going to yoga, I get dressed for my board meeting. I don't have to wear a suit since their office is more casual, but I still want to look polished. My Rockets with a pair of black pointy pumps, striped drape blazer & a fun pop of goldenrod underneath take this outfit from day-to-night. I meet my husband for an early dinner at Joan's in the Park. My feet are killing me, but after taking off my blazer & having a glass of wine - I'm good to go wherever the night takes me (which is right to bed after the boys go down).

Thursday: Work Day & Girls Night

Thursday - Most people wouldn't dream of wearing this to work. If you're not in the fashion business, a solid scarf and a jacket over the tank would be perfect. When paired with a more structured jacket, the lace skirt mixes that feminine/masculine contrast perfectly. The chain strap bag, wood earrings & gold tassel necklace are spot on trend. My outfit is comfortable, cool & transitions right to drinks on WA Frost's patio with my girlfriends.

Friday - Work Day & Date Night

Friday - I love this 3 Dots cozy grandpa cardi. It works great to just throw on when running out the door, which is usually what I'm doing since I'm notorious for being late. I'm loving the pine color of this tank for fall. It's a soft neutral that works with just about any color. The Helen Wang necklace is a perfect match, too (notice the tassel?) Once I'm out on my date, the sweater will be perfect for getting cozy with my hubby in a quiet booth.

Saturday: Gala

Saturday - Obviously, I'm not wearing this outfit all day: grocery shopping, taking the boys to a birthday party, & then to the park. But 5 o'clock hits & it's time to get ready for tonight's gala. I love getting dressed up! A luxury for me is getting ready for a full hour, by myself with a glass of wine or a coffee (depending on how the day went). I'm all ready to slip on this delicate lace outfit from Nicole Miller. It's so elegant & sooo comfortable! I just add strappy silver chain heels, a jeweled clutch, & dangly sparkly earrings and we are out the door. Time to raise money for a good cause!

Sunday: Family Day

Sunday - Time to unwind from the busy week, recharge, & gear up for the next week ahead. We usually lounge around the house in the morning while Dad picks up the boys fresh donuts & my Starbucks. After our healthy breakfast, we spend time working on the house or the yard. By late afternoon we clean up and head over to my parents house for a nice family dinner. It is such a beautiful tradition, to just slow down & enjoy each other's company & great food.

Top 5 Trends - Spring 2016

Dreamy Pastels: We couldn’t be happier with the Pantone color of the year: rose quartz – coincidentally the same color as our freshly painted walls! Several of our designers chose rose quartz & many other pastels to launch us into their spring vision. Shades of grey, pink, sky blue, mint, and creamy neutrals rounded out our favs. How to wear this trend? I love a head-to-toe mix of pastels: imagine a rose trench paired with an ivory pencil skirt, print silk blouse and nude heels for a very feminine work look or Sunday brunch. For the novice, wear a floral print scarf in pastels over a rose quartz T-shirt & light colored denim.

Off the Shoulder: Get to the gym for some lat. pull-downs or just do a few push-ups every morning to get this body part spring wardrobe ready. With demurer hemlines, designers had to do something to show off a little skin. How to wear this trend? With so many options, I have a hard time picking just one. Yoana Baraschi has so many feminine off-the-shoulder little white & ivory dresses this season that will appeal to many different age groups. Nicole Miller has an entire “wear with denim” campaign & I love her prints and color choices. The cut is so sexy, but so wearable. And what woman doesn’t wear cute tops with denim for girls’ night, date night or any night they go out?

Botanical Garden: “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” Sorry, I always think of this Devil Wears Prada quote when I think of trends.  The print of this season is like walking through the Como Conservatory. Much more antique botanical prints than ‘just florals.’ Earthy blossoms, green vines, butterflies & hummingbirds printed on silk blouses and flowy dresses. How to wear this trend? We have a range of tonal floral tops to much more elaborate prints on blouses & maxi dresses. Wear as little or as much as you want, but just make sure to balance the print with minimal makeup & accessories.

“Outside the Bedroom” - Remember that lingerie style from the early 90’s? Well, it’s back and better than ever. Not grungy like Courtney Love, we style it feminine and romantic. From slip dresses & camisoles to silk robes & lounge pants – the boudoir style of dressing is having its moment in the sun. How to wear this trend? Gold Hawk has made a name for itself with underpinnings for the boudoir, but we love their talent for layering slip dresses with silk or lace tunics over them. For a softer touch, pair a camisole with ankle length pants & a loose jacket or open blouse over it. The look is soft, comfortable, and easy – like you just slipped it on (messy ‘undone’ hair completes the look)

“The ‘New’ Modern”: We are not much for the minimalist look, but we are for a modern look. Dresses hang effortlessly with subtle architectural details & simplistic color palettes. Blouses are buttoned up & texture is formed only with mismatched hemlines (tunic tops or vests with calf grazing pants or skirts). Putting it together is easier than you might think. How to wear this trend? Look for shift, sheath or trapeze style dresses in a solid color. Add a delicate necklace or simple earrings & stacked heels to complete this clean look. Ecru & Fifteen Twenty designed perfectly modern blouses. Wear them with ankle length pants, preferably a wide leg and flatforms (or basic sandals to finish off the outfit).
