Styling with Stephanie... 5 Spring 2018 Trends to Try

A new season = a new round of fun trends to try. I selected 5 very easy, very wearable trends to put to the test. Some of them you may already have in your closet, so I will also give some styling tips to help pull your looks together.

The statement sleeve could mean a tie, bell, trumpet, slit or ruffles - often more than one of these. The rest of the silhouette should be simple (although I do like a bold floral print on the statement sleeve blouses). Pair the blouse with straight or skinny denim to keep the emphasis on your embellished arms. In fact, I encourage you to stack some beaded bracelets - like our Goldfine 8-strand crystal ones. On your feet, I love these "of the moment" kitten heel metallic sandals from Rebecca Minkoff.

Light-wash, paper-thin chambray loves warm days & cool nights. Like a perfectly worn T or pair of denim, these spring chambrays are like getting a hug from an old-friend. The old stand-by, but in a fresh new way. Wear this chambray jacket or chambray shirt over a floral dress (long or short). For the button-down, consider tying in a knot to show off your waist. And yes, it's perfectly acceptable to wear a Canadian tuxedo (that's with jeans, to those unfamiliar with the term). If you are going that route, don't match your denim wash & please tuck your shirt. Add a cute silk scarf around your neck or as a belt and an on-the-go backpack from Rebecca Minkoff.

Stevie Nicks rocker-style lace-up with the comfort of sweatshirts and leggings. This is a simple trend to try because lace-ups have been showing up on everything from leather to sweatpants. Whatever your dress code, incorporate some lace-up element. These leggings paired with a cotton-jersey draped moto jacket or oversized sweatshirt is a simple grocery store to casual dinner look. I would wear amazing 90s platform mules to elevate the style factor.

We have been seeing ruffles pop up here & there on specialty pieces, but now it's easy to give this trend a try - from the daintiest ruffle on the cuff of a sleeve to voluminous layers on dresses. Be wary of the ruffles overwhelming your frame. If you are petite, pick a thin or transparent fabric or keep it on the minimal side and for others, throw on layers or ruffles or ruffles in a sturdier cotton poplin. All fun in moderation. Keep the jewelry to one special piece like these gorgeous tiered druzy earrings from Helen Wang. An embossed floral crossbody, especially a chain strap keeps the feminine look modern. Keep your shoes minimal, like a kitten heel or strappy sandal.

Topping off the "Top 5 Spring Trends to Try" is the trench. A spring staple gets a makeover with luxe fabrics and light pastel colors. This trench is actually a dusty rose colored Cupro fabric. It is the new go-to to put over flirty dresses and denim outfits. In this "on-the-go /traveling/cool-girl" look I styled a sweater tank, leather leggings, oversized floral tote (with matching clutch), rose colored sunnies, and a Corkcicle tumbler to hold her Starbucks. For a dressier look, it doesn't get any better than the Line winter white wool trench coat worn by Meghan Markle when she announced her engagement to Prince Harry! Hurry in if you want to get a glimpse of this extra special piece as we only have one left!

Styling with Stephanie... Wear Now, Wear Later

Truth be told, I'm not the best at planning my outfits ahead of time. However, the store is stocked and by the time I have to go to that wedding in August, my wardrobe & the store will be switching over to fall. Here are some wonderful pieces, versatile enough to wear now & later, casual or dressy.

Easter Now, Grad Parties Later

Nothing says spring like a bright, colorful floral. This dress is comfortable & flirty; one of those dresses you can just throw on and go. For Easter Sunday, I'll wear this with ballet flats, dangly earrings and a crossbody bag. Thinking ahead, I would love to wear this out to a graduation party with metallic sandals (or flatforms like these) colorful earrings & a metallic clutch.

Work Outfit Now, Girls' Night Later

This black ruffle blouse is incredibly versatile. It would be perfect for work (jacket optional) with slim pants or a pencil skirt and pointy pumps. I love this basketweave bucket bag, although a structured tote would look fantastic, too. For a girls night at the new Bar Brigade or patio at W.A. Frost, slip on this fun printed Nicole Miller skirt, a bright crossbody or clutch, and wedges and you are ready for anything.

Jumpsuit Now, Jumpsuit Whenever

This Fifteen Twenty cotton jumpsuit just came in. I don't have specific plans for it, I'm only worried I'm going to wear it too often. My first thought is a pool party, second thought - a backyard BBQ, happy hour, taking the kids to tennis, going for an evening stroll... I could go on. For a more casual take, slip on flat sandals, carry a tote, & load on delicate jewelry. To take the look a step further, wear strappy heels, a metallic clutch, & chandelier earrings.

Wear to Dinner Now, Wear to a Wedding Later

Yes, of course, I saved the best for last. I just love this Nicole Miller dress. It makes me smile (and jump for joy). I would wear this with a scarf, sandals & a neutral clutch or crossbody out to dinner with my husband. For a summer wedding, I would wear some sparkly swarovski jewelry from Helen Wang, metallic strappy heels & snakeskin or metallic clutch. Side note, the liner of this dress can also be taken out to wear as a bathing suit coverup. ;)

Haute for the Holidays

The leaves are still on the trees in crimson & gold colors, but at Stephanie's, our thoughts are turning to all of the holiday festivities happening over the next two months. We are here to get you through the holidays looking good & feeling prepared!... You're welcome!

Black Tie Bash

No matter who you are with, this Badgley Mischka will knock everyone's socks off. The lush velvet hugs without being clingy, the neckline is sexy yet demure, and the delicate embroidered sleeves reveal a hint of wine color. We had to add a little Helen Wang sparkle to her neck & a burgundy fur shawl for a little luxury.

Office Occasion

Argh, the dreaded office party - when you spend 40 plus hours a week with others, probably the last thing you want to do is go to a party with them. Take a deep breath, sip a glass a wine before you head out, and slip into this gorgeous Nicole Miller crepe tuck dress. It is modest enough but not too much that you feel like you can't let loose. I recommend adding Swarovski crystal bracelets by our new local designer, Goldfine & contrast with a wool & sequin scarf. This byzantine plum number will be your new go-to dress for years to come.

Family Festivities

What should be the easiest thing to dress for, is sometimes the most difficult. Family festivities might include: cooking at home - don't want to be too hot; going to a play or religious service - need to be dressed up; and playing on the floor with kids - gotta be comfortable. These textured black Ecru pants and on-trend velvet Majestic turtleneck satisfy all of these needs. Adding a unique Helen Wang lariat and leopard print fur bucket bag from USA-made August makes it fun!

Friendly Fete

I saved the best for last because, let's be honest - what holiday parties do we have the most fun at?... the friends' party. Dance the night away or feast on delicious treats wearing this Fifteen Twenty Dress with edgy chain necklace by Goldfine and grab your white ostrich embossed leather clutch. Shine on! Oh, did I forget the amazing fox jacket that will literally be the most amazing thing in your closet? Yes, you need this! Happy Holidays Indeed!!

Styling with Stephanie... Fall in Love with DVF

Three Ways to Wear Your Slip Dress

3 Ways to Wear a Slip Dress

We've been wearing this trend for the past couple seasons but it is still going strong. So many uses for this gorgeous silk print, bias cut DVF slip dress!

  1. 90s trend: I feel like I'm on an episode of Friends in this lookLayering a tight fitting Majestic turtleneck keeps arms covered but still shows off the detail of the dress & your figure. Top it off with long delicate necklaces & chunky heeled pumps or Mary Janes.
  2. Daytime look: Put a cozy, oversized sweater on top of the slip dress, ankle booties & dangly earrings.
  3. Evening look: Throw on a fur, sparkly earrings & embellished shoes or bag and you are le femme glam.

dvf wRap dress: the midi version

The DVF wrap dress: A classic with a twist. I put on this silk jersey midi dress & honestly - you don't have to do anything, it's so amazing. But to change up the classic, add jewel tone accessories. I love these silk tassel earrings from local designer Helen Wang. Add a big slouchy tote to carry all my essentials for the day in a rich wine color. I would wear a luscious velvet over the knee boot if I had them, but a suede pair will work just as well. The wool fedora just gives my outfit that oh-so 70's swagger.

Everyday Lace

I am absolutely obsessed with this outfit!! For a daytime lace look, pair a delicate lace top with dark skinnies or straight leg ankle pants. (I am wearing a dark grey Citizens.) Throw a thin wool jacket, bomber jacket, or grandpa cardi over to keep you cozy and warm. For an evening look: lose the jacket, grab a metallic or embellished clutch & a great pair of pointy-toe heels to complete the outfit.

What I'm Wearing... 7 Pieces, 7 Days

I am going to attempt the (almost) impossible. I am going to style 7 beautiful, versatile pieces from the store & take them from day-to-night all in one crazy week. I will use a typical week for me as an example of how to use a small investment of clothes to make a big impact.

Monday: Casual style, or as I like to call it "Momming"

Monday - I'm thankful I wore a scarf & cozy sweater because it's chilly this morning dropping off the kids at school. I rush to Target to beat the "Mom rush." By the time I walk out, it's warm enough to lose the sweater. Time to get some work done in my office. The lightweight cupro tank is essential after my hot yoga class. Time to head out the door to pick up the boys from school. Where does the time go?

Tuesday: Work Day!

Tuesday - I usually work in the store on Tuesdays. Thankfully, it's a relaxed dress code - we dress professional but true to our personal style. Citizens of Humanity Rockets are my favorite jean right now. The clean, skinny leg is great for booties, flats or my current obsession - a pointy heel. They are high rise which keeps my waistline in check so I can wear this cute lace crop top! The lace is sexy and feminine, but the Tart jacket gives my outfit a professional edge.

Wednesday: Board Meeting to Date with Hubby

Wednesday - After dropping the boys off at school & going to yoga, I get dressed for my board meeting. I don't have to wear a suit since their office is more casual, but I still want to look polished. My Rockets with a pair of black pointy pumps, striped drape blazer & a fun pop of goldenrod underneath take this outfit from day-to-night. I meet my husband for an early dinner at Joan's in the Park. My feet are killing me, but after taking off my blazer & having a glass of wine - I'm good to go wherever the night takes me (which is right to bed after the boys go down).

Thursday: Work Day & Girls Night

Thursday - Most people wouldn't dream of wearing this to work. If you're not in the fashion business, a solid scarf and a jacket over the tank would be perfect. When paired with a more structured jacket, the lace skirt mixes that feminine/masculine contrast perfectly. The chain strap bag, wood earrings & gold tassel necklace are spot on trend. My outfit is comfortable, cool & transitions right to drinks on WA Frost's patio with my girlfriends.

Friday - Work Day & Date Night

Friday - I love this 3 Dots cozy grandpa cardi. It works great to just throw on when running out the door, which is usually what I'm doing since I'm notorious for being late. I'm loving the pine color of this tank for fall. It's a soft neutral that works with just about any color. The Helen Wang necklace is a perfect match, too (notice the tassel?) Once I'm out on my date, the sweater will be perfect for getting cozy with my hubby in a quiet booth.

Saturday: Gala

Saturday - Obviously, I'm not wearing this outfit all day: grocery shopping, taking the boys to a birthday party, & then to the park. But 5 o'clock hits & it's time to get ready for tonight's gala. I love getting dressed up! A luxury for me is getting ready for a full hour, by myself with a glass of wine or a coffee (depending on how the day went). I'm all ready to slip on this delicate lace outfit from Nicole Miller. It's so elegant & sooo comfortable! I just add strappy silver chain heels, a jeweled clutch, & dangly sparkly earrings and we are out the door. Time to raise money for a good cause!

Sunday: Family Day

Sunday - Time to unwind from the busy week, recharge, & gear up for the next week ahead. We usually lounge around the house in the morning while Dad picks up the boys fresh donuts & my Starbucks. After our healthy breakfast, we spend time working on the house or the yard. By late afternoon we clean up and head over to my parents house for a nice family dinner. It is such a beautiful tradition, to just slow down & enjoy each other's company & great food.

Kylie Styles... Cool for Summer

Summer in Minnesota is in full swing. The heat and humidity is unpredictable, and sometimes comes with a vengeance, as many of you lifers know.  Time and time again, we choose comfort over style. Even thinking about trying to look good makes that, all too familiar, brow sweat appear.  Believe it or not, with these simple style tips, you can stay cool, in more ways than one.

The Day Dress

Sleeveless is pretty much a necessity when it comes to staying cool.  Pair a belted shift dress with chic layered necklaces and a roomy bucket bag for running errands, out to lunch with friends, or running around with the kids.

The Perfect Dress for an Event

The last thing I want to do when it’s 90 degrees and humid is dress up for an outdoor event, but a breathable silk dress is the easiest way to look elegant and keep from melting all night.  Pair a boho style, like this DVF dress in a summery coral print, with statement jewelry and an oversized clutch.

Weather Made for a Maxi

My favorite summer trend, by far, is the maxi dress.  It not only looks good on just about everybody, it is the most low-maintenance look, which for summer, low-maintenance is key. Easily accessorized with a few natural beaded necklaces or bracelets and your favorite summer shoulder bag, this look is perfect for a get up and go lifestyle.

White Hot, White Denim

If you don’t have a pair of white jeans, now is the time to take the plunge.  A crisp and clean denim look that is easily dressed up or down, I love white denim with a gorgeous printed silk top, like this Misty Flowers tank by Nicole Miller, and simple accessories.

Casual Chic in Shorts

When I’m not at work, I LIVE in shorts.  A great pair of shorts, like this printed athleisure style from Fifteen Twenty, looks fantastic with a dressy button down or a simple black tank. I love to add interest with unique accessories and my favorite sandals or flats, like this super cute style from Yosi Samra.

School’s out, summer’s here, have fun and remember there is no need to sacrifice, you can look and feel cool all at once!

What I'm Wearing... Summer 2016

Days are longer, kids are out of school, garden is prepped, grad parties & weddings are lined up, beach time, pool time & anything else we can do to get outside to enjoy the weather. Now cabin fever means anxiously waiting for the next time you can head north. It is what summer is all about. Dressing for the summer is much easier with this in mind: anything white, laid back, bright prints and flowy dresses.

"What? Did you say something? No? I'll just keep walking then."

I may look like "Real Housewives" in this outfit, but I'm really more of a St. Paul housewife: practical yet chic. The white pants are insanely soft Tencel with a great drape-y flare & they literally go with everything! The lightweight silver knit tank looks great with denim shorts, pencil skirts or layered over a maxi dress.  Shop the Look Here:

I am in love with this skirt. It fits like a pencil skirt & a mini skirt & it has fringe?! Perfect. I can pair it with a tailored jacket for work, basic T-shirt for day-time, or add edgy accessories & mixed stripe boxy top for a fun going-out look. Shop the Skirt Here:

I am not a stranger to Nicole Miller stretch jersey tuck dresses. I own more than you should know, but the point is - they are ageless, timeless, comfortable, convertible (meaning casual or dressy), and sexy-as-hell! They hug all the right places and hide all the - well, the places you might want to hide (although they are also adorable on pregnant women that want to show off their bump).  Shop the Dress Here:

The second I put this maxi on, I knew it had to be mine. I live in Tolani silk tunics all summer long because they are easy, lightweight, colorful, and feel good! This dress is no exception! I love all the new boho accessories in store: stacked rings, bracelets & ear cuffs from Wanderlust + Co. Shop the store for all the fabulous accessories, but you can Shop the Dress Here:

Mother's Day... Steph & Lora's Picks

Mother's Day: Time to treat yourself and pick out the perfect outfit for the day that's all about you! No matter what you have planned, here are a few of our favorite things that any mother would love!

Mother's Day Brunch

Steph's Picks for Mother's Day Brunch

I like to start Mother’s Day sleeping in, getting a warm cup of coffee in bed, & slowly rising to reflect on the day. Time for brunch, time to look for a classic but feminine dress to wear. This Yoana Baraschi black & white knit is a perfect fit; add a pop of color with a coral cross-body & Helen Wang heart earrings. It’s a perfect compliment to sipping mimosas & celebrating family.

A gorgeous DVF wrap dress is a timeless heirloom. I plan to save all of mine and pass them along to my daughter. They’re the definition of femininity and they never go out of style! This navy and pink floral silk chiffon wrap is what I’ll be wearing for brunch. Paired with a dusty rose Hobo clutch, a Helen Wang rose quartz necklace & “Aurora” Swarovski earrings - my favorite because they share a name with my little girl.

Day at the Park

Just because it’s a park day doesn’t mean that I can’t dress for it. I love the retro fit of this Waverly Grey tank. The skirt is so cute, you would never guess it’s hiding shorts underneath, which comes in handy when I feel the need to do a cartwheel or handstand. The neon pink color in the scarf & handbag make this outfit ready to head out for ice cream.

Comfortable and stylish is the holy grail of mom apparel, especially when you’re chasing kids around the park. Love that these Fifteen Twenty jacquard printed shorts have an athletic cut and drawstring waist. My everyday bag is this Gigi bucket bag because it holds soooo much. Mine is packed with diapers, my makeup bag, snacks and lots more! Throw on a stack of Tess + Tricia bracelets for an easy on-the-go accessory.

Mom's Night Out

Dark high-rise skinnies are the perfect “Mom jean” (reminds me of the SNL skit, but these are seriously cute & well-fitting). I save fun, embellished tops for my girls’ nights because women appreciate the whimsy in them. This Nicole Miller tank is all sorts of fun! Top it off with a cool-girl hand chain & DVF mini secret agent bag & I’m ready for wherever the night takes us!
Lora's Picks for Mom's Night Out

Throwing on a printed silk Tolani top always makes me feel like I’m taking off my “mom” hat and really stepping up my fashion game! This style is one of our favorites because it’s edgier, but still boho. Throw on a pair of high-waisted flares and heels to amp it up. Edgy jewelry from Marcia Moran and a DVF clutch/crossbody complete my mom’s night out look.

Kylie Styles... Bridal Style

Wedding season has begun and as most brides know, there are more occasions to attend than we know what to do with, myself included. So naturally as a bride and as someone who works in fashion, I found myself looking at the racks around me wondering where to start. I swiftly reminded myself to take a step back and focus on the four major bridal events ahead of me, besides the big day itself.

Bridal Shower

Update feminine florals and classic pastels, with unique fabrics and cuts, like this mesh neoprene blush dress by Badgley Mischka or yellow and white jacquard floral dress by Shoshanna.

It's a celebration, so why not wear a fun outfit? Party the night away in cool prints or sparkly embellishments.  This white off the shoulder dress by Yoana Baraschi and this embroidered white shift dress by Shoshanna are fun, yet practical, and uniquely bridal. Pair with a sparkly bag or colorful heel to pump up the party-ready look.

Rehearsal Dinner

Ooze elegance at your rehearsal dinner or welcome party with a lace dress, or lace accents for a more understated look. This midi length dress by Yoana Baraschi is effortlessly beautiful and moves comfortably with your body while you greet all of your guests.

Day After Brunch

The day after your wedding definitely calls for something comfortable, try separates, like these Badgley Mischka (now on sale!) and Ecru outfits, which are a great spin on typical bridal wear.

All in all, dressing up for your events and wedding day should be fun and enjoyable, much like the events themselves. So breath, try to relax, and congrats!

Top 5 Trends - Spring 2016

Dreamy Pastels: We couldn’t be happier with the Pantone color of the year: rose quartz – coincidentally the same color as our freshly painted walls! Several of our designers chose rose quartz & many other pastels to launch us into their spring vision. Shades of grey, pink, sky blue, mint, and creamy neutrals rounded out our favs. How to wear this trend? I love a head-to-toe mix of pastels: imagine a rose trench paired with an ivory pencil skirt, print silk blouse and nude heels for a very feminine work look or Sunday brunch. For the novice, wear a floral print scarf in pastels over a rose quartz T-shirt & light colored denim.

Pastels from Waverly Grey

Off the Shoulder: Get to the gym for some lat. pull-downs or just do a few push-ups every morning to get this body part spring wardrobe ready. With demurer hemlines, designers had to do something to show off a little skin. How to wear this trend? With so many options, I have a hard time picking just one. Yoana Baraschi has so many feminine off-the-shoulder little white & ivory dresses this season that will appeal to many different age groups. Nicole Miller has an entire “wear with denim” campaign & I love her prints and color choices. The cut is so sexy, but so wearable. And what woman doesn’t wear cute tops with denim for girls’ night, date night or any night they go out?

Click here to shop Off the Shoulder Styles

Botanical Garden: “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.” Sorry, I always think of this Devil Wears Prada quote when I think of trends.  The print of this season is like walking through the Como Conservatory. Much more antique botanical prints than ‘just florals.’ Earthy blossoms, green vines, butterflies & hummingbirds printed on silk blouses and flowy dresses. How to wear this trend? We have a range of tonal floral tops to much more elaborate prints on blouses & maxi dresses. Wear as little or as much as you want, but just make sure to balance the print with minimal makeup & accessories.

Click here to shop Botanical Prints

“Outside the Bedroom” - Remember that lingerie style from the early 90’s? Well, it’s back and better than ever. Not grungy like Courtney Love, we style it feminine and romantic. From slip dresses & camisoles to silk robes & lounge pants – the boudoir style of dressing is having its moment in the sun. How to wear this trend? Gold Hawk has made a name for itself with underpinnings for the boudoir, but we love their talent for layering slip dresses with silk or lace tunics over them. For a softer touch, pair a camisole with ankle length pants & a loose jacket or open blouse over it. The look is soft, comfortable, and easy – like you just slipped it on (messy ‘undone’ hair completes the look)

Click here to shop Lingerie-Inspired Styles

“The ‘New’ Modern”: We are not much for the minimalist look, but we are for a modern look. Dresses hang effortlessly with subtle architectural details & simplistic color palettes. Blouses are buttoned up & texture is formed only with mismatched hemlines (tunic tops or vests with calf grazing pants or skirts). Putting it together is easier than you might think. How to wear this trend? Look for shift, sheath or trapeze style dresses in a solid color. Add a delicate necklace or simple earrings & stacked heels to complete this clean look. Ecru & Fifteen Twenty designed perfectly modern blouses. Wear them with ankle length pants, preferably a wide leg and flatforms (or basic sandals to finish off the outfit).

What I'm Wearing... Holiday 2015

The Holidays are coming and the party invitations have already been rolling in. This year instead of stressing myself out figuring out what to wear at the last possible second, I decided to plan my outfits. Now I can sizzle in my outfits, not fizzle into the background.

Here are 3 outfit choices for 3 very different events...

Falcon & Bloom sequin dress perfect for a holiday gala

Falcon & Bloom sequin dress perfect for a holiday gala

First up is Fashion Fest, a gala benefiting the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital, a cause near & dear to my heart. Our store is actively involved in the Fashion show, the pop-up shop, and getting to know the wonderful supporters of the cause. It is a fun, glitzy event with local celebrities and athletes involved in the fashion show & mostly women in the crowd. I need a fun party dress that's comfortable and lets me move easily through the crowds. Sequins - check, furry clutch - check, gold & sparkly accessories - check!

Thanksgiving is for family, food & comfy clothes!

Thanksgiving is for family, food & comfy clothes!

Thanksgiving Day is a tricky one - you want to look nice and festive; a little conservative because you are around family, but not stuffy or too dressed up. You want to be comfortable to fit all that good food & wine in your belly, but a sweatsuit just wouldn't be appropriate - wouldn't it be awesome though, for that after-turkey nap? No,no, no- it would look terrible in pictures & doesn't quite fit with the beautiful table setting your Mom spent weeks getting just right. The next best thing to sweatpants are the stretchy James Jeans joggers with a dressy velvet tuxedo leg. This adorable bulldog sweater keeps it on the fun side (and it's boxy which is great for covering up that second slice of pie you "just had to try." The silver flats feel like wearing house slippers but look festive. And no Turkey Day is complete without the family football scrimmage - hence the adorable fur pom pom hat & leather/knit gloves.

Mix of textures: lace, sparkle, and snakeskin - a fabulous corporate holiday party combo

Mix of textures: lace, sparkle, and snakeskin - a fabulous corporate holiday party combo

After my 2 favorite events comes the corporate party (waaa-waaaaa...). Not my cup of tea and probably my least favorite thing to dress for. No worries - that's where planning and shopping at Stephanie's makes it fun and gets you psyched to go. Here are the requirements: cocktail reception, casino night with dinner & entertainment. Sounds fun, right? Keep in mind there are executives, accountants, foreman and equipment operators at this party - quite the mix. Here is how to dress to blend in with this mix, but still look & feel special. I chose this gorgeous, extremely flattering fit-n-flare Shoshanna lace dress contrasted with sparkly Helen Wang crystal necklace, snakeskin clutch and wool & sequin scarf (in case it gets chilly).
